Belly Dancing Coins - The Coins & the Key to the Sparkle and Shimmer of Belly Dancing Costumes

If you have been around belly dancing for any length of time then you know that belly dancing costumes ramp up the fun factor. If you watch an experienced dancer closely you will notice how the costume of a belly dancer is just as much a part of the attraction as the moves themselves. The flashing gold elements of a good costume are a staple of the art.

The fact is that belly dancers don't wear much jewelry because it usually gets in the way of the fluid movements that make up a good routine. However, belly dancing coins are an exception. Coins are often used on the belly dancing bras and hip scarves to accentuate the movement of these focal areas.

History Of Coins

Where the use of coins on the belly dancing costume came from no one really knows. Most authorities believe they were fist used when the coins were given to the dancers as a token of appreciation. Or possibly it came from the gypsy dancers who share a similar dance style. Regardless of how they came about, they have become a de facto requirement on belly dancing costumes.

Coins On Scarves

Hip scarves are commonly covered with belly dancing coins to accentuate as the movement of the hips. The sparkling color, and tinkle sound of the coins add a sense of flair to a good belly dancing routine.

There are two ways to get coins on your hip scarf. First you can purchase them and sew them on yourself thus creating a custom scarf. Or if you would prefer there are many scarves that come with coins positioned in very beautiful patterns. If you want to create your own coin-patterned scarf then make sure to purchase the coins with pre-drilled holes. You can combine these coins in any pattern you wish, or you can even mid in some beads to make a very elaborate design.

Coins On The Headdress

Some dancers prefer to not have any beading or coins on their hip scarves. They will often then opt to place the coins on the headdress instead. Many costumes have a headdress as part of the package that is already covered with coins. These create an exotic flair and look quite regal when you step on stage.

Coins On Bras

And lets not forget the bra or top to your costume. It is very common to find tops that already have coins sewn into them, however feel free to experiment with your own designs. Simply attaching coins to the bottom of your belly dancing top, or even add them directly to your belly dancing bra.
