I have only raised boys and have therefore only had to worry about buying things like baseball and football equipment, but my brother has a daughter and I have helped him with a few things for her, including helping him find ballet shoes for her when she first began taking ballet. Of course there are some boys taking ballet as well, mine would never have done it but Arnold Schwarzenegger took ballet to help him with his bodybuilding competitions and I doubt very seriously if anyone ever teased him about it! But, I digress. We are here to talk about choosing ballet shoes and some of the things you need to watch out for.
If you are totally lost when you first get started you can always ask the ballet teacher for some suggestions to help you get started, some teachers may even have sources that will allow you to order straight through the teacher which of course will save you a great deal of time, but you may pay extra for the convenience. Here are some of the things you need to consider when you are shopping.
As with any shoes of course you will definitely want to be sure that the ballet shoes fit properly so you need to bring the child along with you so they can try the shoes on, unless you are buying on the internet. If this is the case be sure that the vendor you are buying from has a very liberal and easy return policy. Always be sure the child is wearing her tights when you try the shoes on so that you are sure of the fit, bare feet will cause you to get a pair that are too tight while wearing socks will cause you to get a pair that are too big. With ballet shoes it is essential that they fit very snug so that they don't end up coming off while the child is dancing. Most ballet shoes will feature a strap that helps keep the shoe where it should be and this is something that is necessary for children.
Perhaps more than any other type of shoe ballet shoes must be very flexible. Many more experienced ballet dancers my want something a little more supportive but for children the flexibility of the shoe is vital. The shoes should protect while allowing for a natural feel and movement.
Of course you always want to look for quality when shopping for any type of shoe and ballet shoes are no exception to this rule. You can spend a few bucks and end up having to buy several more pairs during a year or you can invest more upfront for shoes that will last.
